Overview

What this service covers

Nobody reads long documents in the middle of an outage, so runbooks need to be short, precise and rehearsed. Each of the ten failures you are most likely to face gets its own, describing the symptoms, what to check, the actions to take and when to escalate. You also receive a severity scale, an on-call rota, prepared customer and internal messages, and a blameless post-incident review template. We finish with a tabletop exercise that tests the runbooks with your team.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • Runbooks for the 10 failure scenarios you are most likely to face
  • Defined severity levels with the expected response for each
  • Your on-call rota, configured in your chosen paging and scheduling software
  • Escalation paths with names, phone numbers and decision points
  • Pre-written messages for customers and for internal status updates
  • A blameless post-incident review template and process
  • A single tabletop exercise with your team
How it runs

The work in 4 stages

  1. Stage 1: Find the risks

Past incidents and your architecture are reviewed to spot likely failures.

  2. Stage 2: Draft the runbooks

Each is drafted alongside the people who would be paged in practice.

  3. Stage 3: Set up the rota

Scheduling, alert routing and escalation are configured in your tools.

  4. Stage 4: Rehearse

A tabletop exercise tests the runbooks and we close any gaps it finds.

Fit and inputs

Who it suits, and what we need from you

Ideal for

  • Organisations where one person deals with every incident
  • Companies with uptime commitments but no formal on-call rota
  • Startups that found out during a first major outage that no process existed

What we need from you

  • Access to your monitoring and alerting tools
  • Time with the engineers who currently handle problems
  • Any record of previous incidents, even informal notes

You share these through the brief on your order page after checkout.

Why it helps

What changes for your team

  • Incident response no longer relies on one person picking up
  • Customer messaging during an outage is prepared ahead of time
  • Post-incident reviews produce fixes instead of blame
Questions

Questions about this service

Not in this service. Our managed support retainer is the option that puts our engineers on the rota.

Start with our monitoring and alerting setup. Runbooks are of little use if no alert ever sends anyone to them.

After every incident where one was used, and at a quarterly review. We include the process for doing that.

This is a remote service: nothing is shipped physically, and the work is delivered into systems you control. See delivery and handover and refunds and cancellation for the full terms.
