First Mobile App Release

A first mobile app release for both major phone platforms, ready for real users and submitted to both app stores on your behalf.

Overview

What this service covers

The point of a first release is to find out whether people will actually use the product. We write one shared codebase and build a single core journey well, rather than spreading effort across many. Releases run through a managed build service, and over-the-air updates let us fix problems without waiting for store approval. Push notifications, offline handling and crash reporting are all included, because users judge an app harshly without them, and we manage the submissions to both app stores for you.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • A single codebase that builds apps for both leading mobile platforms
  • Up to 15 screens forming one complete user journey
  • Login, push alerts and offline-friendly data handling for patchy networks
  • Crash and error reports sent to a monitoring service
  • Store listing materials prepared and both app store submissions made
  • Over-the-air update route for fixes after release
  • Source code, signing keys and store accounts held in your name
How it runs

The work in 4 stages

  1. Stage 1: Journey selection

We trim the feature list down to the single journey worth testing.

  2. Stage 2: Fortnightly builds

Work runs in two-week cycles, each ending with a build you can try.

  3. Stage 3: Closed testing

Your chosen testers use the app through each store's internal testing channel.

  4. Stage 4: Store launch

We submit to both stores, respond to reviewer feedback and watch the launch.

Fit and inputs

Who it suits, and what we need from you

Ideal for

  • Founders validating an idea before funding a full product
  • Businesses whose customers keep asking for an app
  • Teams with a working web product but nothing on mobile

What we need from you

  • A developer account with each mobile platform, or budget set aside to open them
  • A firm choice of the one journey this first release must prove
  • Someone available each week to try new builds and settle product queries

You share these through the brief on your order page after checkout.

Why it helps

What changes for your team

  • One codebase covers both platforms, so each change is made once
  • A working product with real users in weeks, not months
  • Store accounts and signing keys are yours from day one
Questions

Questions about this service

For a first release, two native apps usually cost nearly double with little difference users would notice. If your roadmap later needs deeper device features, we will tell you.

You pay them directly to the two store operators. We never publish your app under our own developer account.

Fixes during the first ten working days after release are covered. Any further work moves onto an ongoing support plan or a fresh scope.

This is a remote service: nothing is shipped physically, and the work is delivered into systems you control. See delivery and handover and refunds and cancellation for the full terms.
